The Dark Knight certainly fleshes out swathes of Gotham throughout its chaotic tour of the city, providing both a look into luxurious settings like Wayne Enterprises' expensive offices, and the seedy underbelly that contrasts it. Add to this a responsibility to show not only a changed Batman, but also a changed Gotham, and it's evident that Reeve's sequel shares enough with The Dark Knight to utilize it as a heads-up of what to do - and what not to do - when it comes to the story of The Batman 2. Both movies introduce the Joker formally into the plot of their respective universes, and set up for a multi-villain story - with The Dark Knight focusing on the Joker, but also setting up Two-Face, and The Batman 2 clearly set to have the Joker and Riddler at its forefront. Mercifully, it did that and then some, making it a perfect blueprint for The Batman 2 to learn from.Īnd this would be ideal, as The Batman 2 amps up the stakes and villain roster in a way decidedly similar to The Dark Knight. Batman Begins had set up a reimagining of Gotham that saw immediate success with audiences worldwide, placing pressure on The Dark Knight to live up to expectations. The Dark Knight is one of the most iconic Batman movies to date, if not one of the most iconic superhero movies of all time. The high hopes for The Batman - Part II set it perhaps an even bigger movie challenge than its predecessors - but it has many places to take helpful lessons from, most notably its tonal doppelganger and fellow sequel The Dark Knight.
